Congressional critics of U.S. prescription drug importation from Canada are citing the affordability of quality generic pharmaceuticals as evidence that Americans do not need to go outside the United States to find lower-cost medications.

The FDA is substantially accelerating the pace of its generic drug approvals- a move that agency officials say will provide significant cost savings for millions of U.S. patients. A total of 474 generic drugs were approved by the FDA in 2004 compared to only 364 new generic approvals in 2003.

Over 50% of all prescriptions in the U.S. are filled with generic drugs and, on average, generic drugs are priced 50% cheaper than branded drugs according to a resolution referred to the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee for action. At Acology Pharmacy savings are much greater than 50% however.
